Signs Your Cummins Needs a Shop
- Long crank or hard start, especially on a cool morning (grid heater, lift pump, or injectors)
- Stalling, surging, or a loss of power under a trailer
- Black smoke under acceleration or white smoke at idle
- A knock or rattle that changes with load
- Check engine light, or a DEF, DPF, or "service DEF system" message
- Fuel economy that has fallen off without a change in driving
- Coolant loss, overheating in traffic, or a sweet smell after a drive
- Harsh or slipping shifts on a 68RFE transmission behind a 6.7L
Call 281-469-1152 or book online. 24/7 towing is available if the truck is not safe to drive.
Cummins Generations We Service
- 5.9L 12-valve (1989 to 1998). Mechanically injected and famously durable. Typical work: injection pump and lift pump service, killer dowel pin, front cover and seal leaks, and cooling system upkeep on high-mileage trucks.
- 5.9L 24-valve (1998.5 to 2002). Typical work: VP44 injection pump failure caused by a weak lift pump, so we test the lift pump first, plus injector and cooling service.
- 5.9L common rail (2003 to 2007). Typical work: injector wear and replacement, lift pump upgrades, turbo service, and exhaust manifold and up-pipe leaks.
- 6.7L Cummins (2007.5 to present). Typical work: DPF and EGR faults on trucks that see short trips, turbo actuator and variable-geometry turbo problems, DEF system codes, injector and fuel pump service, the grid heater bolt issue on 2013 to 2018 trucks, and 68RFE transmission service. The 2019 to 2020 trucks with the CP4 pump get a fuel system check before any pump work.
Older Ram 2500 or a new 3500 High Output, the model year and engine are enough for us to know where to start.
How We Diagnose a Cummins
- Full scan of the engine, transmission, and emissions modules with diesel-capable equipment
- Live data review: rail pressure, injector balance rates, boost and turbo actuator position, EGT, and regeneration history
- Lift pump and high-pressure pump testing, fuel filter condition, and water separation checks; on VP44 trucks the lift pump is tested before the injection pump is blamed
- Turbo inspection for shaft play, boost leaks, and a sticking variable-geometry actuator
- Cooling system pressure test and EGR cooler check
- Grid heater, battery, and starting circuit tests for cold-start complaints
- Emissions system review: DPF soot load, DEF quality and dosing, and NOx sensor health
You get the findings and a written estimate before any repair starts. Our diagnostics page covers how we handle warning lights across the shop.

Cummins Maintenance That Prevents the Big Repairs
- Fuel filter and water separator service on schedule, sooner for trucks that tow or sit

- Lift pump pressure checks on 24-valve and common rail trucks, because a weak lift pump is what kills the expensive pump downstream
- Coolant condition testing and cooling system service before summer
- Grid heater and battery testing before the first cold snap
- Transmission fluid service on trucks that tow, before the fluid is burned
Performance, Towing, and Fleet
A Cummins with a camper, horse trailer, or equipment behind it can benefit from turbocharger and exhaust upgrades, injector upgrades, and ECU tuning set to the load you actually pull, and we will tell you plainly when a modification is not worth it for the way you drive. For work trucks and fleets we offer diesel service capacity up to F-550-class trucks, priority scheduling, secure after-hours key drop and pick-up, per-unit service records, and a fleet charge account through CB Charge.
Diesel Service Beyond the Engine
A Cummins truck is a whole vehicle, and the parts around the engine wear faster on a truck that tows. On the same visit we handle brakes sized for towing, alignment for lifted and loaded trucks, AC for Cypress summers, transmission and transfer case fluid service, and steering and suspension wear from the extra weight up front. Our diesel repair page covers everything we do for diesel trucks, and fleet accounts can put every unit on one schedule.

Cummins Repair FAQs
Do you service both the 5.9L and the 6.7L Cummins?
Yes, every generation from the 12-valve through the current 6.7L High Output, including the 24-valve VP44 trucks and the 2003 to 2007 common rail.
My 24-valve Ram is stalling and hard to start. Is it the injection pump?
Often the VP44 pump has failed, but the cause is usually a weak lift pump that starved it. We test the lift pump first, and when the pump is replaced we address the lift pump so the new one lasts.
My 6.7L keeps going into regeneration or says "service DEF system." Can you fix that without the dealer?
Yes. We diagnose and repair DPF, DEF, and EGR faults in-house, including forced regenerations, DEF heater and quality problems, and NOx sensor replacement.
What is the grid heater bolt problem?
On 2013 to 2018 6.7L trucks the grid heater terminal bolt can erode and drop into the intake. If your truck is in that range and has not had it addressed, we inspect it during service and can replace the grid heater with an updated part.
How often should the fuel filters be changed on a Cummins?
Most trucks are due every 10,000 to 15,000 miles, and sooner if you tow or fuel at a lot of different stations. Water in diesel fuel is the fastest way to lose a set of injectors.
Do you service the 68RFE transmission?
Yes. Fluid and filter service, and diagnosis of harsh or slipping shifts, which on a truck that tows is often fluid condition before it is a hard part.
Is the repair covered by a warranty?
Yes. Repairs at Skeeter's Auto Service carry a 36-month / 36,000-mile nationwide warranty.
Is there a Cummins repair shop near me in Cypress that handles fleet trucks?
Yes. Priority scheduling, per-unit records, after-hours drop-off and pick-up, and a fleet charge account for businesses running Cummins-powered trucks.
